How Much Does A DUI Cost?

It’s impossible to give an exact figure on how much a DUI charge is going to cost you, but you clicked on this link because you wanted an answer. After it’s all done, if you are convicted of DUI it’s likely going to cost you upwards of $10,000.

Below, I have broken down the costs into sub-categories so you can have a better understanding of the total. This is only intended to give you a rough estimate on the costs.

Fines:

If you are convicted of DUI, the law gives the court a fixed range of fines which can be imposed. For a first time offense, the fines start at $500 and max out at $2,000. For subsequent offenses the fines increase, eventually exceeding $4,000. If you are convicted of a first offense the typical fine ranges from $500-$1,000. If your case is dismissed, there won’t be any fine. If your charge is reduced, the fine amount varies from $0 - $1,000.

Fees:

Fees aren’t necessarily connected to a conviction and start early in the process with getting your car out of impound. Additional fees that you might be facing are: DUI school, license reinstatement, probation, counseling, cost of investigation, court costs, the cost of prosecution, and possibly an interlock device.

If convicted of DUI, you are facing fees between $1,500 - $2,000.

If your charge is reduced, you are facing fees between $300 - $2,000.

If your case is dismissed, you are facing fees between $300-$500.

Legal Costs:

Quality DUI Lawyers ain’t cheap! If you find a lawyer that is cheap, there is probably a reason. DUI is a niche market in the criminal field. Most DUI attorneys charge a case on a fixed fee schedule. That’s probably a good thing for you considering how many hours are dedicated to the typical DUI case.

A DUI Attorney for a first time DUI is going to cost between $2,500 - $5,000.

For additional offenses the price range increases.

What Do I Charge:

Without knowing the details of your case, it’s impossible for me to give you a firm quote. In most circumstances our first time DUI cases are quoted between $2,500 and $3,500. Included in that price is the cost of representing you at the DHSMV hearing, all associated traffic tickets, any related charges that arose from the same set of facts, and, typically, any unrelated traffic tickets that you may have received within the past 30 days.

Indirect Costs:

There are other costs that you would be better at quantifying. Does a DUI affect your work? Does a DUI Conviction cause a potential problem with gaining future employment?  How much does not being able to drive for 30 -90 days cost?
